Ignite New Mexico 7 TONIGHT!

Without a doubt one of the most fun events in the Albuquerque and Santa Fe areas (there's some work on a Las Cruces-based event as well), "Ignite" events bring together presenters for a range of creative fields (though especially in the range of 'design' areas). With speedy talks selected by the online audience, there's rarely a weak one -- and as with short film fests, a weak one is over pretty quick. I hope you'll check it out.

What is THATCamp?

THATCamp (The Humanities and Technologies Camp) is an "unconference" where humanists and technologists meet to work together for the common good. An "unconference" is "a facilitated, participant-driven conference centered around a theme or purpose." Unconferences are not spectator events. Participants are involved from the schedule creation to the wrap-up session, and actively present, discuss, and collaborate with fellow participants.

Why THATCamp New Mexico?

New Mexico's rich heritage in the arts, culture, and sciences make it prime THATCamp territory. THATCamp New Mexico is the beginning of a new collaborative digital humanities community. We are a diverse group united in our commitment to the creative use of technology to communicate New Mexico's stories, from ancient times to the present, and to reconnect all New Mexicans to the spirit of innovation that spans our history from the oldest Clovis point through the development of the atomic bomb and the founding of Micro-soft.

No Suits, No Papers.What Do You do?

Show, tell, collaborate, share, and walk away inspired. Sessions at THATCamp New Mexico might range from software demos to training sessions to discussions of research findings. The thing you won't see is people standing up and reading full blown papers.

Still a little unsure as to what you might want to propose? To get an idea of the scope of topics check out the blog for the original THATCamp <http://thatcamp.org/2009/blog/> or some of the regional camps (THATCamp Columbus <http://thatcampcolumbus.org/> , THATCamp Pacific Northwest <http://www.thatcamppnw.org/> , or THATCamp Austin <http://www.thatcampaustin.org/> ). Don't feel limited by these topics, however. Anything is fair game if it falls under the categories of humanities and technology, and impacts you, your organization, or the field of digital humanities.

How do I Register?

Easy! Just go to the Registration section of this website (www.thatcampnewmexico.org <http://www.thatcampnewmexico.org/> ), fill in the form, and you are good to go. Unfortunately, we can only accept a max of 100 people, so we're going to have to do some vetting. If you've got any questions about applying, contact us. Deadline for submitting is September 3, 2010.

Attendance at THATCamp New Mexico is free, however, a donation of $25 is requested from all attendees to cover meals, snacks, and supplies.

RG-SIGGRAPH: Open Reel Review - THIS SATURDAY!

Dona Ana Community College and UNM's ARTS Lab & Center for Advanced Research Computing are hosting the next Rio Grande SIGGRAPH Chapter 'Open Reel Review" this Saturday w/ Sony Pictures Imageworks Lead Animator Glenn Sylvester (IMDB) from 4-6 PM (location details below).

For aspiring animators and those wishing to move up in the industry, it's essential to have a 'Reel' that works. The Rio Grande SIGGRAPH Chapter's Open Reel Review series exists to help New Mexico's animators improve the content they present by providing feedback from real world pros about what works and what doesn't. This month's installation focuses on Character Animation. Whether you provide content of your own or just attend in listen in, this is an invaluable experience.

The Open Reel Review series relies on the use of the NM Computing Application Center's statewide "Gateway" system. While we've primarily used sites in Albuquerque and Las Cruces, RG-SIGGRAPH is eager to connect with more people and programs throughout the state. Fulldome Professional Development Webinar this Monday & Tuesday

I'm writing in support of the unique opportunity you'll find below: It's a wonderful program dedicated to fulldome-based professional development in computer graphics as well as data-based archeological and cultural studies. The presenting team, led by Kevin Cain, is an exceptional cast that have much to share with the fulldome producing community and the resources they're making available have great value in both production and research. If you saw Kevin's talk at DomeFest2007, you'll have an idea of how clear the communication will be and how exciting the work is.

Because of the usual bandwidth issues, there's a limited number of 'live' connections available and we invite those of you interested in fulldome content (and the many related tools and techniques Kevin and his team will discuss) to attend with us here at ARTS Lab. The ARTS Lab will be hosting a group of interested participants here in our space (contact us at artslab@unm.edu if you'd like to attend). Chabot Space & Science Center and INSIGHT are pleased to invite you to participate in the Maya Skies Online Masters' Class - a FREE 2 day Webinar designed to introduce full dome producers and humanities researchers to the production tools and archive material available at the Mayaskies.net dissemination website.

The dissemination project, which was funded by a supplemental grant from the NSF, stemmed from our desire to share with others the expertise and learning - both in terms of production techniques and archaeological archive material - that were acquired during the production of Tales of the Maya Skies.

Day one

of the Webinar is designed to help full dome producers produce immersive media from real-world environments. Day two launches the Maya Skies Archive, a freely accessible repository of archaeological data from Chichen Itza, Yucatan, Mexico. Both days keep the practical needs of full dome producers and humanities researchers front and center.

Introduction to Data-Driven Full Dome Production I: Pipeline Overview

The full dome is highly immersive. As a format, full dome excels at presenting real-world places with great immediacy. But it's not simple to create realistic environments that hold up on the dome, especially for producers with limited budgets and experience. This session introduces a pipeline for capturing data from the real world for use in full dome media. 2D and 3D reality capture are discussed, drawing on examples of time-lapse panoramic photography and 3D laser scanning. While aimed at first-time dome producers, more experienced creators will also benefit.

Session 2
Introduction to Data-Driven Full Dome Production II: Tech Walkthrough

This session expands the discussion of Session 1's data-driven production pipeline. We present a focused introduction to managing laser scan data in production, from initial capture through alignment, merging, surfacing, and painting. Particular attention is paid to techniques for editing, UV layout and texturing steps, as conventional approaches generally fail with dense data-driven geometry. This session is designed for full dome producers new to 3D reality capture techniques.

Building Realistic Computer Graphics for the Full Dome

From the start, the lion's share of full dome media content has been supplied as rendered images from 3D computer graphics. Realism, long an object for CG images, is now becoming possible even with modest budgets. This session explores two practical ways to increase realism for full dome graphics: non-biased rendering of light, and efficient use of dome sampling in compositing. Using the Tales of the Maya Skies production as a basis, we present suggestions for managing the complexity of rendering with natural light while remaining practical and efficient. We also discuss new tools to optimize color reproduction on the dome for rendered images and present an automated system for processing renders for collaborative review.

Archaeologists and art historians have been practicing digital field techniques for at least the past decade. However, the recent proliferation of good, cheap digital cameras and affordable processing power has enabled humanities researchers to take on more ambitious digital documentation projects. In this session we survey research from the worlds of computer graphics and computer vision, showing approaches that can be directly applied to cultural heritage work. We present the computer vision research for Tales of the Maya Skies as the core of our discussion, with emphasis placed on open source tools and off-the-shelf equipment that will work in the difficult field environments found at archaeological sites around the world.

Maya Skies Archaeology Case Studies and the Maya Skies Data Archive

Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company performance

Part of the SITE Santa Fe Biennial's Opening Weekend, this special performance by Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company features a new commission and collaboration with OpenEnded Group. The opening weekend live performance will consist of a selection of recently reconstructed and rarely-seen duets that showcase the company's polished movement technique. The performance will include Duet, a piece featuring some of Jones' most sophisticated movement, and one or two other seminal works that use a repetitive, formalist vocabulary which echoes the concerns of visual artists who influenced Jones and Zane's creative process. The premiere theatrical screening of the new high-resolution edition ofGhostcatching will be interwoven with the dances, foregrounding the cross-genre collaboration in the company's body of work. The program has a running time of approximately one hour.

The installation at SITE Santa Fe will consist of the world premiere of the tenth anniversary edition of Ghostcatching, the renowned video that brings the movement of dancer Bill T. Jones into revelatory clarity using advanced motion capture technology.

Renowned musicologist Volker Straebel speaks on "The sonification Metaphor in Instrumental Music". The sonification metaphor is not limited to electronic sound synthesis and computer music, but can be applied to instrumental music as well. The relation of sonification to program and experimental music is discussed and works by Iannis Xenakis, Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Cage and Alvin Lucier are briefly introduced. The paper leads to a discussion of the connection between sonification and romanticism, where the desire is to directly evoke an understanding of natural phenomena.

Volker Straebel (1969) is a musicologist focusing on electro-acoustic music, the American and European avant-garde, intermedia, performance and sound art. He is co-director of the Electronic Music Studio at Technische Universität Berlin and teaches Sound Studies at the University of Arts (UdK). Furthermore, hhe is curatorial adviser to contemporary music festival MaerzMusik and has realized and performed indeterminate works by John Cage and himself.

Nakatani / Weaver / Balistreri Trio was formed in 2007 in performance at the (now defunct) Blue Dragon in Albuquerque while Tatsuya Nakatani was on tour across the country, playing solos and collaborations with with local musicians as he traveled - such as the Albuquerque improvised music duo of Mark Weaver and Mike Balistreri. Finding that they shared similar approaches to space, sound and environment, the trio stayed in communication, and reconvened for well-received performances at the Outpost Performance Space (2008) in Albuquerque, the College of Santa Fe (2008), at The Agency (2009) in Albuquerque, and at Santa Fe Complex (2009).

Tatsuya Nakatani (percussion) is originally from Osaka, Japan. In 2006 he performed in 80 cities in 7 countries and collaborated with 163 artists worldwide. In the past 10 years he has released nearly fifty of his own recordings on CD.

Nakatani has created his own instrumentation, effectively inventing many instruments and extended techniques. He utilizes drumset, bowed gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects, bells, and various sticks and bows to create an intense, organic music that defies category or genre. His music is based in improvised/ experimental music, jazz, free jazz, rock, and noise, yet retains the sense of space and beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music.

In addition to live solo and ensemble performances, Nakatani works as a sound designer for film and television. He also teaches Master Classes and Workshops at the university level and heads H&H Production, an independent record label and recording studio based in Easton, Pennsylvania. He has been selected as a performing artist for the Pennsylvania Performing Artist on Tour (PennPat) roster, and is a Bronx Arts Council Individual Artist grant recipient.

Tuba player Mark Weaver is a native New Mexican who has contributed to countless creative music projects in the Southwest region and on the West Coast, and who has recorded for Balance Point Acoustics, Black Phone Records, Leaf Records, Carrot Top, Newsonic, Nine Winds, pfMENTUM, Plutonium, Snowdonia, and Zerx. Recent projects include Resonance (duo with vocalist Patti Littlefield), UFO Ensemble with Bill Clark, Christian Pincock, and Jason Aspeslet (which explores Mark’s unique approach to ensemble composition), The Rumble Trio with Mike Balistreri and Ben Wright (long-standing improvised-music trio which performs with a different featured ‘front’ artist each time), and Tubanator5000 which incorporates live audio manipulation and sampling by Bee.

A drummer in a past life, Mike Balistreri brings a distinctly percussive approach to the double bass. Having devoted himself almost exclusively to improvised music, Mike has collaborated/performed/recorded with a wide range of musicians, poets, filmmakers, and performance artists. He spent a year and a half on the road in 2004-2005 playing improvised music with artists across the country. Recently Mike has been performing with The Rumble Trio, I-Beam (Milwaukee), and his large ensemble project th3 e1emental orke5tra.

The work David Beining and our immersive media group have been doing has really begun to pay off. UNM School of Engineering students are currently working hard in support of the NSF-funded Partnerships of Innovation project in immersive media -- and we've had great success in our collaboration with the students of Claudia Valdes' Electronic Arts class. Ryckman won a top prize at the Fulldome Film Festival, an international program held at the Zeiss Planetarium in Jena, Germany – the birthplace of the planetarium. Ryckman's immersive art film "Wander" won the coveted "Creativity Award" which included a stunning glass trophy created by the renowned optics company Zeiss and a cash prize of 500 Euros (about US$600). http://www.fulldome-festival.de/

Ryckman created her winning piece as an assignment in the "Immersive Media: Fulldome" course, under the instruction of Assistant Professor Claudia X. Valdes (Electronic Arts program / Department of Art & Art History). http://www.claudiaxvaldes.com/ Valdes' course is supported by UNM's ARTS Lab and its "gDome," a small research and education digital dome studio in the transdisciplinary new media laboratory which supports research, education and economic development for the university and state-wide media industry. http://artslab.unm.edu

All of the works developed in Valdes' course screened in the international competition at the festival. Of the ten submissions, three were selected as finalists (including Ryckman's). Student submissions to the fulldome festival also came from four German universities, including the prestigious Bauhaus University at Weimar, and Tongji University in Shanghai.

MFA graduate student at UNM, Mitchell Marti, received an honorable mention award for his code-based film "Oculus."

This is the second consecutive year Valdes and ARTS Lab have collaborated to offer the course and for a UNM student to win a top prize at the festival in Germany.

In addition to winning the fulldome festival award, last week Ryckman earned her Bachelor of Art degree from UNM's Department of Communication & Journalism.

For the first XD Group workshop, hosted graciously by the ARTSLab, we will focus on integrating Computer Vision (CV) + Infrared (IR) Light setups in Processing and openFrameworks for Experiential Art and Design projects. The 1st hour will focus on how to get CV + IR working in Processing, with a 10 minute presentation at the beginning of the hour. The 2nd hour will focus on how to do the same within openFrameworks.

The XD Group

The XD Group was formed by Dr. Woohoo (http://www.drwoohoo.com) with the need to either disseminate or create innovative and open-source approaches that solve challenges within the realm of Experiential Art + Design (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Experience_design) in a format that is conducive to learning. 516 ARTS and UNM ARTS Lab present a workshop and demo exploring some how-to techniques of robotics and hacking as they can be applied to artistic practices. This workshop is led by Simon Mehalek, artist and researcher featured in Artificial Selection.

Participants will learn robotics concepts, options for different sensor systems, and how Arduinos can be used to control other systems. Participants will work in groups to complete assembly and initial programming of basic moving robot w/ wheels, sensors and an arduino brain.

MAN, MACHINES & METROPOLIS (featuring The Chuppers) (Friday, April 30th 8PM)

In conjunction with the Artificial Selection exhibition, 516 ARTS and UNM ARTS Lab present a unique evening of live music and digital media inspired by the dystopic vision of Fritz Lang’s classic film Metropolis (1927) and issues of humanity and machines. This event features a performance by The Chuppers, a showing of specially selected content in ARTS Lab’s fulldome theater, the “GDome”, and a few other treats. The Chuppers grew out of UNM’s Electric Ensemble, a collaboration between UNM’s Music Department, Ubik Sound and the Interdisciplinary Film and Digital Media Program (IFDM). Facilitated by Manny Rettinger, the group creates musical instruments called “chuppers” which combine old and new technology, including audio processors, speakers, computers, microphones, cameras, traditional and non-traditional instruments, projectors and more.

PHILLIP THURTLE :: Vital imagery: animation and life

The world presented through digital technology is an increasingly animated world. Film, the WWW, and television now contain significant amounts of animated content. Despite the prevalence of animated content, few scholars have begun to explore the cultural, epistemic, and phenomenological dimensions of animated experience. This talk will focus on one specific component of animation, the differential manipulation of layered surfaces, in order to deepen an understanding of why animation is so useful for depicting change over time. An exploration of the animations of William Kentridge and Stephanie Maxwell, will help us understand why some animations seem to posses an extraordinarily amount of vitality, the feeling of the potential for change even if nothing really changes. We will then see how the emerging science of evolutionary and developmental biology uses this sense of vitality to depict the development of living organisms.

BIO:

Phillip Thurtle is the acting director of the Comparative History of Ideas program and an associate professor in the History Department at the University of Washington. He is the author of /The Emergence of Genetic Rationality: Space, Time, and Information in American Biology 1870-1920/ (University of Washington Press, 2008), the co-author with Robert Mitchell (English, Duke University) and Helen Burgess (English, University of Maryland) of the interactive DVD-ROM /BioFutures: Owning Information an Body Parts/ (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2008), and the co-editor with Robert Mitchell of the volumes /Data Made Flesh: Embodying Information/ (Routledge, 2003) and /Semiotic Flesh: Information and the Human Body/ (University of Washington Press, 2002). His research focuses on the material culture of information processing, the affective-phenomenlogical domains of media, the role of information processing technologies in biomedical research, and theories of novelty in the life sciences. His most recent work is on the cellular spaces of transformation in evolutionary and developmental biology research and the cultural spaces of transformation in superhero comics.

About Anton Kozikowski:

Anton Kozikowski is an Emmy award winning Writer/Producer who cut his teeth at CBS In San Francisco where he produced promotional content for Investigative Reports, Survivor, Super Bowl XXXVIII and Special Projects.
In 2005 Kozikowski established Blur to Focus Productions. His 25 minute documentary film "Climate Change: New Mexico" was featured on Comcast "On-demand" and incorporated NASA Satellite Imaging, Animation, 3D Compositing and interviews from the country's top environmental specialists. The film examined snowpack and streamflow at the Santa Fe watershed. (Currently being presented in science curriculum at several NM schools)
In 2009, Kozikowski worked with Mechanical Designer Ed Reasner, and a team of Engineers from Los Alamos labs to develop camera stabilization technology and will be pursuing the patent process in 2010.
Kozikowski was recently First AD on a REDCAM film out of New York. The film "Stuck" was shot on the same location as "No Country for Old Men." He is currently in post production on a short action drama film titled: "Wild Horses" which he directed and produced. Wild Horses was shot using HVX200 and the RedRock M2 lens adapter system (http://www.redrockmicro.com/micro35.html) and is scheduled for release in July.

If you are a filmmaker or a story teller, or ever want to become one, you owe it to yourself to see this film; it will be one of the very best insightful "courses" you will ever receive on the subject. In the end we all do this because of the human aspect of it – there are joys and struggles that connect all of us, and storytelling is the common bond – it allows us to remember we are all "in it together". I saw this in Santa Fe and being a big Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung fan I personally think this is the best film on the subject since the Bill Moyer's interviews with Campbell. New Mexico Innovators Join Forces on Fulldome Research

The most common experience many people have with "fulldome immersive environments" is with planetariums such as the LodeStar planetarium at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. In today's digital age, however, it's not surprising that the technology used in producing such immersive environments is evolving quickly and that New Mexico is playing an important role.
A new, statewide research partnership called "PFI: Consortium for Fulldome and Immersive Technology Development" received $597,220 in funding March 1 from the National Science Foundation's (NSF's) Partnerships for Innovation program. PFI grants promote innovation by bringing together colleges and universities, state and local governments, private-sector firms, and nonprofit organizations. PFI helps these organizations form partnerships that support innovation in their communities by developing the people, tools, and infrastructure needed to put new scientific discoveries to practical uses.
The new consortium will develop the hardware and software that will make it possible to use fulldomes as interactive, multisurface environments that help people visualize, simulate, or experientially comprehend a wide range of information, from educational and artistic material to evaluating scientific data and complex systems.
Two of UNM's most creative labs are cornerstones of the consortium – the Advanced Graphics Lab in the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department of the School of Engineering, and the multidisciplinary ARTS Lab. The other two cornerstones are based in Santa Fe: the Santa Fe Complex and the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA).
The project leader is Pradeep Sen, Assistant Professor in the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department (ECE@UNM). He holds a joint appointment with the school's Computer Science (CS) Department and is co-founder and director of UNM's Advanced Graphics Lab (AGL).
"One of the key challenges with trying to grow a sustainable industry is to develop a critical mass of interested people," Sen said. "With the partnership we have formed between the Santa Fe Complex, IAIA, the ARTS Lab, and the Advanced Graphics Lab, we now have the critical mass to move forward. We are very excited to see what we can accomplish together."
NEW MEXICO BRAIN TRUST
"We have assembled a diverse team for this project," Sen said. "For example, David Beining, the associate director of Immersive Media at UNM's ARTS Lab, has been working on and promoting dome technology for years. We would not have gotten this grant without people like him leading the way with these exciting technologies."
Sen's partners on the project are Beining, ARTS Lab founding director and CS Emeritus Professor Ed Angel, and IAIA Dean Ann Filemyr. Other senior contributors include ECE@UNM Professor Tom Caudell, Santa Fe Complex researchers Stephen Guerin and Steve Smith, CS Assistant Professor and AGL co-founder Joe Kniss, School of Engineering Interim Dean Arup Maji, and IAIA Chair of New Media Arts Carlos Peinado. Additional partners include the Institute for the Study and Integration of Graphical Heritage Techniques (INSIGHT) and Sky-Skan Inc., manufacturer of the world's first true fulldome digital video system and of the ARTS Lab's fulldome.
The team from UNM's Advanced Graphics Lab will focus on the technical aspects of the project and will work closely with researchers at the Santa Fe Complex, particularly Stephen Guerin and Steve Smith, to contribute to innovations in immersive technologies.
The Advanced Graphics Lab is the research laboratory at UNM that focuses on cutting-edge work in the technical aspects of computer graphics and digital media. The video-game development program that Sen started through AGL is ranked by Princeton Review as one of the top 50 video-game development programs in the country.
The Santa Fe Complex provides a collaborative workspace that fosters applied complexity science through interdisciplinary education, outreach, and development of innovative technologies to address real-world problems, enable social cooperation, and create economic opportunities.
"SFComplex is an open community project incubator applying complexity research in the intersection of science, technology and art," said Stephen Guerin, who serves on the Complex's board of directors and is president of the Santa Fe-based Redfish Group. "We're excited to work with our colleagues at UNM and IAIA to explore new applications in interactive dome projection and ambient computing that will help realize 'AnySurface' applications where whole rooms become interactive."
The project team aims to innovate and develop fulldome projection technology scaled and priced in a way that makes it accessible to everyday users. The new technology is expected to drive innovation and foster growth of the digital media industry in New Mexico, including the state's burgeoning film industry.
MAKING IMMERSION ACCESSIBLE
"Domes are naturally an immersive medium," Sen said. "Your entire field of view is covered by the computer-generated imagery. We propose to explore new ways to produce dome content efficiently as well as study how a team would use the dome to interact collaboratively with data."
Part of the Fulldome and Immersive Technology project will focus on developing novel technologies that make immersive environments possible without having to construct dome structures. The researchers believe that this will not only make immersive environments helpful in understanding complex scientific data, but will also lead to more commercialization opportunities for the technology.
"Not everyone has a fulldome at home," Sen said. "The way to make these technologies more accessible is to develop ways to turn any ordinary environment, say the corner of a room, into an immersive projection environment. Once everyone can get an immersive environment in their home, immersive content will naturally follow."
The project rests partly on the foundation already laid down by the ARTS Lab in putting together fulldome environments both at the LodeStar digital planetarium in the Natural History museum and at the ARTS Lab itself.
UNM had a previous PFI grant, "The Digital Pueblo Project," for which Ed Angel served as principal investigator. The project initiated efforts to build upon the scientific, artistic and cultural resources of New Mexico to create a sustainable distributed media industry. This project was the beginning of the collaboration on expanding fulldome technology under leadership of David Beining, who was then director of the LodeStar Astronomy Center. The Digital Pueblo project was a major factor in establishing the ARTS Lab, with seed funding from the Governor's Media Education Fund, and it led to collaboration with the Santa Fe Complex, which was seeded by the City of Santa Fe, and with IAIA and its New Media program. Angel currently chairs the Santa Fe Complex board of directors.
"These immersive environments create powerful science communications for both public education and scientific research," said Beining. "In the Fulldome and Immersive Technology project, we intend to create both tools and professionals that can evolve into economically beneficial businesses as well as educationally supportive programs."
Research at the Santa Fe Complex will be centered on extending dome technology to ambient computing, an environment that includes projections on arbitrary surfaces such as the interior of rooms. Multiple cameras and projectors would allow the environment to react to users without the aid of devices such as computer mice or headsets.
Sen plans to start the AGL's portion of the work by creating a flexible software framework that will help programmers develop dome and immersive software. The framework will act as a middle layer between the developer's application and the display software to give the programmer flexibility in creating new uses for immersive environments.
"In traditional computers, developers use platforms such as OpenGL or DirectX to decouple their code from the display," Sen said. "We need to do something similar for projection domes, where the software infrastructure will automatically adjust based on the configuration of the environment."
EXPANDING WORKFORCE SKILLS
The project will help develop an educated workforce for a new high-tech industry in New Mexico, and both UNM and the Institute of American Indian Arts will have a key role in this area.
UNM classes taught through the ARTS Lab will use dome technologies for student projects. In Santa Fe, students at IAIA will gain hands-on experience by working with a multi-surface immersive environment that will be set up on their campus using UNM fulldome expertise and funds from the PFI grant.
"With the new dome facility at the Institute of American Indian Arts," said IAIA Academic Dean Ann Filemyr, "we are hoping to extend our reach in serving Native communities with cutting-edge technology for educational purposes ranging from indigenous astronomy to new ways to share traditional stories."
IAIA's mission is to empower creativity and leadership in Native arts and cultures through higher education, lifelong learning and outreach. The IAIA installation will also broaden the range of spaces in which fulldome technology is currently being applied. In this case, the uses of the fulldome will include educating students in STEM-related areas: science, technology, engineering and math.
"The Institute of American Indian Arts, through its New Media Arts Department, is taking bold steps to ensure that our students have access to leading technologies in order to empower themselves as future storytellers," said IAIA New Media Arts Chair Carlos Peinado. "Our partnership with the University of New Mexico, the Santa Fe Complex and other PFI stakeholders will allow our students access to project-based materials that will investigate the creation and application of immersive media, a subject that holds interesting possibilities for a myriad of challenges facing Indian Country."
"This PFI grant recognizes New Mexico's unique technological, cultural and artistic resources," said consortium co-leader Ed Angel. "It also recognizes New Mexico's leadership in an area of enormous potential for a sustainable industry, and the commitment of multiple institutions and government to the success of the project."

About UNM's Advanced Graphics Lab
The Advanced Graphics Lab (AGL) was founded by UNM assistant professors Pradeep Sen (Electrical & Computer Engineering Department) and Joe Kniss (Computer Science Department) in fall 2006 with the mission of researching the science and technology of computer graphics and digital media. Aside from the two faculty members, the lab hosts a set of associated researchers, visiting professors, and eight full-time graduate students.
The AGL team does research in areas as diverse as high-end rendering, computational photography, computer vision, and visualization. Research by Dr. Sen and his students has been published at SIGGRAPH, the leading conference in computer graphics, as well as peer-reviewed journals such as ACM Transactions on Graphics, IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, and the Eurographics Computer Graphics Forum.
The video-game development program that Sen started through AGL is ranked one of the top 50 video-game development programs in the country in Princeton Review's April 2010 issue and in Gamepro magazine. Sen plans to leverage the success of his game development program to build a team of students that can develop content for the Fulldome and Immersive Technology project.

About the UNM ARTS Lab
The ARTS Lab -- Art, Research Technology & Science Lab -- has been involved in fulldome research and production since its inception in 2004. It is UNM's state-of-the-art facility for interdisciplinary research in digital media, and it actively develops creative relationships connecting art, science, business and technology in New Mexico's unique environment. Its vision is to be a catalyst for education and research that will grow and sustain an advanced media industry in New Mexico. Formed in response to the state's Media Industries Strategic Plan, it supports innovation and growth in film, new media, simulation, telehealth, game technology, image processing, scientific visualization, national security applications, and new markets for content.
The ARTS Lab maintains a Digital Media Garage, which is a black-box space outfitted to support performance, experimentation and research in digital graphics, sound, and real-time immersive projection systems. It includes a 15-foot-diameter hemispheric domed projection surface, a Vicon motion-capture system, a 30' x 40' green screen studio, and an AV production suite.
DomeFest, ARTS Lab's annual festival and conference, brings together artists and researchers from around the world to see and discuss work that expands the medium and helps build the fulldome community. In addition to this annual juried show, ARTS Lab produces fulldome work, most recently a sequence from the NSF-funded "Tales of the Maya Skies." The Fulldome and Immersive Technology project builds on this work and on industry relationships to develop new content and display capability for fulldome and other potential environments.

COOPER-MOORE:

Multi-instrumentalist, composer, storyteller, instrument-builder and educator Cooper-Moore’s approach to music has gone beyond simple categorization. His work emerged from the jazz avant-garde, but never lost sight of the traditions he deems so important. This adherence to tradition is reflected in his name, derived from the family names of his two grandmothers and adopted in 1985.

Cooper-Moore’s interest in theater informs his entire oeuvre: his music is as theatrical as his stories are musical. His pianism can invoke moment-to-moment shades of Cecil Taylor’s multilinear constructs or Jaki Byard’s historically informed paraphrases. It exists, as one of his album titles proclaims, Deep in the Neighborhood of History and Influence.

Whether playing piano or any one of his homemade instruments, his music exudes a striking directness and simplicity that evokes everything from rhythm and blues to the simplest vocal monody. These points of reference lend his music multileveled appeal while always allowing for a fresh approach to composition and performance. They harken back to the infinitely complex yet starkly simple myths from which human communities draw for continued survival; for Cooper-Moore, this is as it should be. “We often forget the simplest human emotions, and it’s part of my job as a musician, as a performer, to remind people.”

JEREMY BARNES:

A native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jeremy Barnes began playing music professionally at the age of 19, with a then unknown psych/folk band called Neutral Milk Hotel. After touring extensively in the U.S and Europe, the band split up and Barnes moved to Chicago, where he worked at the Hothouse (Center for Creative Music), where he met many of the improvising music scene's greats- Roscoe Mitchell, William Parker, Han Bennink and Cooper Moore, among others. He moved to France in 2000, where he formed the project A Hawk and A Hacksaw. After a few albums and tours of Europe and The U.S., the band was awarded a grant from the Arts Council of England, which funded a high profile tour of the UK as well as an ongoing collaboration with 4 Hungarian folk musicians. In 2007 they were also awarded best live music performance at the Brighton Fringe Festival in Brighton, England. Barnes and Heather Trost, violinist in A Hawk and a Hacksaw, moved to Budapest for two years as a result of the Arts Council grant and tour. . In 2008 they returned home to New Mexico, and have toured more in the U.S. and Europe as well as Australia, Israel, and Turkey. They sold out the Outpost performance space in the fall of 2009.

The Cooper-Moore/Barnes duo is a new project that the two have discussed for years. They will be recording an album in the Spring and playing shows in New York in June of 2010.

Desirée Holman is an Oakland, California-based interdisciplinary artist. Her process involves fabricating (or, less frequently, appropriating) figurative props, which are manipulated in role-playing games. The work questions what games of make-believe, like the ones created in her work or ones created in multi-user online games or elsewhere, can tell us about our behaviors in the ‘real’ world. Holman was recently awarded a San Francisco Modern Museum of Art SECA award and an 2007 Artadia: The Fund for Art and Dialogue award. Her work has been exhibited internationally at venues such as the Sao Paulo Museum of Modern Art, Hessel Museum, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art; Milan’s BnD, Toronto’s YYZ, The Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art; Berkeley Art Museum and Lisa Boyle Gallery in Chicago. In 1999, directly after completing her BFA in sculpture at CCA, Desirée attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She graduated with her MFA from UC Berkeley in 2002. Her work has been reviewed in publications such as Artforum, Los Angeles Times, NY Arts, Artillery, San Francisco Chronicle, and Artweek. The Hammer Museum mounted the first solo museum exhibition of her work in November 2009. Holman is represented by San Francisco’s Silverman Gallery.

Global Game Jam -- Right Now!

One of the things we like to do from time to time is bring several creative types together to make some cool content, whether that's in the form of games, film, software or something else.

One of the more interesting examples is our participation in the second annual "Global Game Jam" -- a 48 hour game development event where game makers with various skills come together to form groups and make a game or two. It's a great way to get to work with and get to know others in our local game development community.

The event is already underway here at ARTS Lab with about 14 participants, five games in the making, and a little over 24 hours to go. If you'd like to check it out, visit:

For the third year, New Mexico's game development community gets together to meet, talk, play games and raise funds for Childsplay, the "gamers charity". All proceeds from the night go to benefit UNM Children's Hospital.

How does Child's Play work? From the site:

"With the help of hospital staff, we've set up gift wish lists full of video games, toys, and movies. You can go to each hospital's list and buy a toy, and that toy will be sent to the hospital. Some of these kids are in pretty bad shape. Imagine being stuck alone in a hospital over the holidays, getting something from a fellow gamer would really raise their spirits. Some of the stuff the hospital will give away for kids to keep, while other gifts (like consoles) will be kept by the hospital for patients to use throughout the year."

His pieces show a tactile sense of space, movement, image and aurality combined with a precise economy of materials. Osborn has received grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Creative Work Fund, and Arts International and been awarded residencies from the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program, the Banff Centre for the Arts, Het Apollohuis (Eindhoven, Netherlands), STEIM (Amsterdam), the Djerassi Resident Artist Program (Woodside, CA), and the Center for Research and Computing in the Arts at UC San Diego.

He has presented his work worldwide with exhibitions at the singuhr-hörgalerie (Berlin, Germany), the Berkeley Art Museum (Berkeley, CA), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco), Artspace (Sydney, Australia), the Institute of Modern Art (Brisbane, Australia), Sonambiente Festival (Berlin, Germany), the Kiasma Museum, (Helsinki, Finland), MassMOCA (North Adams, MA), the Auckland Art Gallery (Auckland, NZ), and the Sonic Arts Research Centre (Belfast, Northern Ireland) among many others. He has lectured and taught in numerous institutions and is currently Assistant Professor in the Visual Art Department at Brown University.

DESCRIPTION:

The Transducers (featuring Martin Back, James Brody, Philip Mantione, Christian Pincock, and Frank Rolla)

The Transducers is a group of five composers and improvisers from diverse backgrounds spanning three generations of experience. They utilize laptops, custom software, sound sculptures, circuit bending and custom electronics to produce unique sonic worlds. Within the context of unstructured improvisation, they incorporate audience collaboration by means of the Photo-Instigator, a light-sensitive device suspended above the performers that picks up light beams originating from the audience.

These rays are transduced into MIDI controller data streams that are sent to the performers to use or ignore as they see fit. So in essence, audience members become
collaborators, instigators and possibly saboteurs.

One of the organizations that's mentioned most often when people discuss getting our digital media production and research community together is SIGGRAPH ("The Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Graphics and Interactive Techniques" to be more precise). As a few people on this list might mention, New Mexico once had one of SIGGRAPH's most active chapters.

Now with the arrival of Sony Pictures Imageworks, continued growth of film and other developments there's an desire to see whether there's enough active interest to restart a successful chapter, with an info session organized by Imageworks' Rachel Nicoll.

KRISTIN LUCAS

Kristin Lucas creates video, installation, intervention, digital photographs, sculpture, and Internet artworks. Positioning herself at the center of her projects, Lucas' work addresses the effects of rapid-spread technology on the human condition. Reversing a popular concept of infusing humanity into machines she instead applies familiar strategies of electronic media to her own life. Transformations, mutations, and portraiture are the focus of works set to the backdrop of empty and meaningful exchanges with automated tellers, television, shopping malls, healing arts therapists, police officers, and a judge.

Lucas' work has been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions, including the Art Gallery of Windsor; Images Festival, Toronto; ICA, London; ZKM, Karlsruhe; Cheekwood Museum, Nashville; The Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, and Artists Space, New York. 'Touching the Edge of the Universe'

US premiere screening and talk on the making of "Touching the Edge of the Universe," a new European fulldome film produced at the creative department of the "Mediendom" of the University of Applied Sciences Kiel (Germany). It involved up to 100 people and innovative techniques like 360° digital Red-One video camera filming.

Two Space 2009: The Dome Version

In 1979, at the dawn of the computer-graphics age, Larry Cuba made a short, experimental film called Two Space. The film was released in the 16mm film format, a relatively inexpensive exhibition technology that (at the time) fell into a sweet-spot on the spectrum between the highest resolution available and the most affordable. Although accepting the limitations of 16mm, the artist imagined the film as a totally immersive experience, completely encompassing the audience's field of view, perhaps to be exhibited someday in a venue of the future --- a sci-fi speculation he thought of as The Ideal Theater.

As technology advances, wild speculations such as these turn into daily reality. In 2009, the artist was able to transfer the original film to digital form and then replicate each frame to fill the expanse of the Full Dome Master. This presentation will briefly review the processes involved in the film's original production in '79 and current rebirth as a full dome experience, finally realizing the artist's original vision, 30 years later. The sky is filled with aircraft that transport people from place to place, perform utilitarian duties, assist in communications, enact military missions, or wander above us as debris. DomeFest Returns to New Mexico this Fall

ALBUQUERQUE -- DomeFest 2009, the global festival for fulldome, runs September 25-27 with its 2009 program of artistic and technological innovations for large-format, immersive digital dome theaters -- “fulldome.”

After sold-out shows during DomeFest 2008 when it premiered in Chicago during the International Planetarium Society’s biannual conference, in its sixth year, DomeFest returns to New Mexico with a program that celebrates the medium’s past, exciting new works and bright future.

“With all the major Hollywood studios now producing 3D content, continued improvements in processing power and projection capabilities the fulldome medium is reaching critical mass,” says DomeFest founder David Beining. “This year’s DomeFest will really define where we are now and the promise of the future.”

The 2009 festival includes Friday’s “Real-Time Rodeo” and the US Premiere of “DomeFest Retro5pective,” including some of the “best of” and audience favorites from previous DomeFest juried shows, Saturday’s global premiere of the DomeFest 2009 juried show and coveted “Domie” awards, and a special Sunday night performance of J-Walt’s new 3D “Omnicentric Universe” for DomeFest Plus attendees. Each day includes several other premieres and much unique content. Main shows and making of talks will be held at the NM Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS), Technical talks, discussions and Small Dome presentations will be held at UNM’s ARTS Lab.

In this panel, Todd Jefferson (Director of Games for Marvel), Graphic Novelists Arnold and Jacob Pander ("the Pander Brothers") and award-winning VFX artist Ziad Serafi (Golden Compass, Sin City, Pirates of the Caribbean) will discuss taking comics and graphic novels and transforming them for games and the screen. It's a pretty amazing panel.

Help support the local film community and all the arts in Albuquerque, meet great people and have fun.

We will be having a volunteer orientation meeting this Saturday, August 1st at 10:00 at the AFF office located at 102 Gold SW.

Additionally, we are looking for a volunteer coordinator, preferably with some prior volunteer coordinator experience. This position will require quite a lot of time , the ability to multi-task under pressure and effective organizational skills, . If anyone is interested in taking this on please call me or if you know of someone with this skill set who would like to volunteer please forward this e-mail to them.

Today, Saturday 18 July 2009 The Root 66 will tape the first 4 episodes of their new Live Music Television Program, The Root 66 LIVE at the historic Kimo Theatre in downtown Albuquerque, NM. Hosted by Albuquerque Local Vocalist/Radio Personality Leah Black and Albuquerque Local Musician/Graphic Designer Zach Freeman, The Root 66 stage will be graced by performances from Poema (Rio Rancho, NM), Marsh (Albuquerque, NM), David Smith (Santa Fe, NM) and Ghost In The Machine (Phoenix, AZ). The doors will open at 11:00am with taping starting at 12:00pm. Audience participation in the taping will be FREE to the public and a wonderful introduction to some amazing up and coming musicians. I'm glad to pass along info on my favorite local screenwriting teach, Matt McDuffie -- who's offering another set of Screenwriting Intensives. More info below:

ONE-DAY SCREENWRITING INTENSIVES

Matthew McDuffie, an instructor in the Dramatic Writing Program at the University of New Mexico, and a professional screenwriter who has written for HBO, Showtime, Warner Brothers, and the producers of ER, Capote, and Six Feet Under, will lead a series of intimate one-day workshops for filmmakers and storytellers who are determined to create stronger stories, characters, and commercially viable screenplays.

Classes are scheduled for July 18th and July 25^th, and will cover the foundations – the mechanics of plot, then quickly move on to the development of each participant’s storyline. Individuals are encouraged to bring in ideas, or existing work, the goal being to have a complete outline by the end of the day.

The workshops will be held at KNME Studios in Albuquerque from 9 AM to 4 PM. The cost is $125. Call (505) 385-1323 or write tobuzzblanco@comcast.net for more information and reservations. A $25 deposit is required, as lunch will be served on site.
