Global Game Jam -- Right Now!

One of the things we like to do from time to time is bring several creative types together to make some cool content, whether that's in the form of games, film, software or something else.

One of the more interesting examples is our participation in the second annual "Global Game Jam" -- a 48 hour game development event where game makers with various skills come together to form groups and make a game or two. It's a great way to get to work with and get to know others in our local game development community.

The event is already underway here at ARTS Lab with about 14 participants, five games in the making, and a little over 24 hours to go. If you'd like to check it out, visit:

Live Streaming by Ustream.TV

We're also happy to share that our friends in Las Cruces are playing too! Check them out at:

If you're *really* interested, we're planning to demo and talk about our projects tomorrow (Sunday) at 4PM.

Upcoming... & Recent

We just finished up a great week with visits from two real leaders in different parts of our media world. Laurie Anderson stopped by just before her show at the Kimo as part of the LAND | ARTS Series of events, and on Saturday, games and interactive media thinker/writer/developer Chris Crawford talked on Interactivity and his Storytron project.

Good times.

A couple near future events to keep an eye out for here at ARTS Lab are:

BSG Revisited (6/25)
First, on Thursday, June 25th, we'll be having "What the Frak!? BSG Revisited" -- a viewing and discussion of some key moments from Battlestar Galactica's run. More info to come.

NM Game Jam (7/10-12)
In July, the weekend of the 10th will see the first "NM Game Jam" -- a 48 hour game development jam from us at ARTS Lab and the good folks of our Rio Grande IGDA chapter. Several of us had a great time during the Global Game Jam and we intend to keep that game development energy up here in NM.

Location and a few other details to come... but if you're interested, please sign up at: http://nmgamejam.org

Domefest 2009
What else in July? Well, there may be a special dome show, but Domefest is moving... to September. Watch this space and the ARTS Lab site for more details.

There are only a few hours to go before Global Game Jam (an international game development 'jam' competition) starts -- it officially kicks off here in New Mexico at 5PM January 30th over at ARTS Lab.

Want to sign up? I need your info today! (ewhitmore at gmail dot com)

UNM ARTS Lab hosts Global Game Jam (1/30-2/1)

UNM's ARTS Lab will host the New Mexico operations of this year's Global Game Jam. What is the Global Game Jam? From their site:

What is a Game Jam?
In a Game Jam, participants come together to make video games. Each participant works in a small team on a complete game project over the course of a limited time period, usually over a weekend. With such a small time frame, the games tend to be innovative and experimental. The Global Game Jam (GGJ) is the first of its kind: a game Jam that takes place in the same 48 hours all over the world! The global Game Jam will start at 5:00PM Friday, January 30, 2009 through 5:00PM Sunday, February 1, 2009, (all times local). All participants in the Global Game Jam will be constrained by the same rules and limitations, with each time zone having one distinct constraint.

The inaugural Global Game Jam also features a streaming video keynote from World of Goo developer Kyle Gabler (pretty cool!).

Street Address: 131 Pine St., NE (One block west of University Blvd., 1/2 block north of Central)
Building Name: UNM ARTS Lab

Participants must pre-register - no admission without pre-registration
